Floods in Singapore: Who should be blame?
Singapore is once again affected badly by the flooding season. Will Orchard Road become the next Venice? Millions of dollars loses have been incurred and who should actually take up the cost and the blame? In my opinion, no one should be blame for this major flood. Forecaster did not predicted that there will be a heavy flood. I believe if they have predicted that there will be an upcoming flood, measures will be taken to prevent floods invading into shopping malls.
Since the flood had happen, the government had come up with a few solutions and measures. They modified the drainage system which can help to block the litters and the leaves and enhance faster flow of water. Some shopping malls has also came up with the sandbag idea which practically they use to prevent the flood from entering the mall. The sandbag is not only an eyesore, but they also make the shopping malls to look like an warzone.
The problem is, do all this actually reduce the consequences of the flood? Even though new drainage system is created, it is also not enough to let the water quickly flow through, which result in another flood. Even though sandbag is use, they only let the flood to be concentrated in the middle of orchard, which makes transport even more difficult. Also, when it starts to rain heavily again, people have to quickly get those heavy sandbag and place it infront of the mall which makes it too inefficient.
I believe what Singapore can do is to discuss this problem with the engineers and suggest new ways to prevenet a huge flood in the future.
